Maxi Yacht Racing To See Giant Yachts

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is just around the corner. It is to take place from the 4th to the 10th of September in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. This race is organized jointly by the International Maxi Association (IMA) and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The title sponsor of this prestigious racing event is Rolex.

There are as many as 52 entries for this year and 25 of the massive yachts that will take part in the race belong to the IMA. The biggest attraction at this year’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is of course the Wallys that come with 13 of its most luxurious and high performing yachts.

The Magic Carpet Cubed of Sir Lindsay Own Jones and Galateia of David Leuschen are the two yachts that will be leading the pack of 13 of the Wallys, according to the lead partners Plain Sailing Yacht Charter. The lineup for the SuperMaxi class looks a very strong one with the likes of the Nauta 115 Nikata from Baltic yachts, Win-Win designed by Javier Jaudenes and the Swan 115 Highland Fling 15 by Irvine Laidlae. This year will also see the return of Farr 115 ketch of Sir Peter Harrison to the racing circuit.

The Secretary General of the IMA, Andrew McIrvine, said that the race this year would be more exciting than ever. There are a lot of new oats competing this year and that too many will be taking part in the SuperMaxi division. There is going to be huge challenge faced by the contestants to craft these giant boats over cunning courses. It is a very big spectacle and the Island of Maddalena has something in it that attracts more and more sailors year after year. The races are slated to take place over the leeward, windward and coastal courses. Everyone is geared up for this year’s event and the gigantic boats have started to arrive.
